Beijing National Stadium uses approximately 76,600 BTU/hr in heating, and 183,000 BTU/hr in cooling, which is approximately $59,300 in natural gas costs, and nominal costs in electricity.
I do not believe it would be difficult to perform the calculations for this building, as it doesn’t require extensive HVAC systems due to the lack of conditioned space. Part of the design of this building was to make it as efficient as possible using natural ventilation and lighting. The real challenge in this building would be the actual design, and implementing the natural ventilation and lighting, while still supplying the needs necessary for such a large space.
